Hoo Kee Bak Chang was founded after the war by Chew Hai Chwee, a former clerk who turned to hawking street food as a more lucrative way to support his growing family. The business and the family expanded over the next two decades. Hai Chwee realised he had a winning recipe - sales were so brisk that he had to enlist the aid of eleven of his children.
For over 50 years, Hoo Kee Bak Chang has been tantalising the taste buds of Singaporeans with their traditional, authentic and delectable Hokkien Bak Changs (rice dumplings).
Hoo Kee Bak Chang 和记肉粽 is the only Bak Chang store in Singapore awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand (Street Food 街头小吃) for 4 consecutive years from 2016 to 2019.
The rice was stickier than usual and rather flavourful. If you want to make your calories worthwhile on a rice dumpling, then it should be Hoo Kee’s. And great that they are keeping the traditions alive.
